Using Fresh Greenery for Outdoor Holiday Decorating Part I: Wreaths

Dec 2, 2019 · by Meg

A beautiful fresh wreath on the front door is an excellent way to welcome guests to your home during the holidays. Keep reading to find out how to use a few simple decorations and an inexpensive fresh wreath to make a beautiful fresh holiday wreath for your home this holiday season.

Our holiday wreath this year.

Step 1: Purchase a fresh evergreen wreath. During the holidays, you can find these everywhere. Your local greenhouse, nursery, tree farm, and grocery store will have these wreaths for sale. Don’t worry about the bow or decorations because you can add your own. You should pay attention to the wreath’s size and the quality of the greenery. Don’t buy a wreath that seems dried out. A really fresh evergreen wreath will have flexible branches. If the branches are brittle, it probably means the wreath is beginning to dry out.

Step 2: Gather supplies for embellishing your wreath. The key to making a basic evergreen wreath look amazing is using a variety of types of evergreens. I like adding cypress, white pine, boxwood, and silver dollar eucalyptus to a plain Fraser fir wreath.  You can find fresh eucalyptus in the floral section of your grocery store, or you can find the dried version in the floral section of your local craft store.

The wreath looks so much better after adding the additional greenery

Step 3: Add decorations. For this year’s wreath, I kept the decorations really simple by adding a set of bells and a striped ribbon. The sky is the limit with what you might want to add to your wreath. Consider adding more colorful decorations such as ornaments or berries.

Step 4: Hang your wreath. I love to use ribbon to hang the wreath on my door. The looped hanging method makes the wreath look much more sophisticated. There are two options to hang the wreath using this method.

Option 1: Loop the ribbon around and the wreath and bells (if using), adjust to the desired length (more on that in a second), and attach the ribbon to the top of the door with a few nails. This works well if your door is wood or fiberglass.

Option 2: If you have a metal door, you will need to use this option. Loop the ribbon around the wreath like you would for the first option. Take an inexpensive metal wreath hanger and straighten out the bottom hook. Then wrap the ribbon over the top of the hanger and attach it with hot glue.

Important Tip:

Do not hang your wreath too high on the door. A slightly larger wreath that is hung lower on the door looks so much better. The wreath will look best if the top of it hangs slightly below the top quarter of the door. You should also keep the size of the wreath in mind when selecting the ribbon. A larger wreath will look better if hung with a wider ribbon, and a smaller wreath will look better with a narrower ribbon.

The wreath is hung below the upper section of the door. I took a smaller section of the ribbon and tied a simple knot to make the bow on this wreath.

I hope you enjoy making your own version of a fresh wreath for your home this holiday season!

Happy Holidays!
