How to Make Inexpensive Pre-lit Garland Look Amazing

Nov 22, 2019 · by Meg

Garlands are one of my favorite Christmas decorations. I absolutely love how they can transform a space, but they can get expensive really quickly. My solution….spice up inexpensive pre-lit garlands from the craft store! Keep reading for all the details on how to incorporate garlands into your holiday decorating this year.

Step 1: Purchase inexpensive pre-lit garland. I use this garland in my home.

These garlands are available at any craft store or box store.

Step 2: Attach garlands to your banister. I like to use clear zip ties like these.

You can cover the ties with a few branches from the garland.

Step 3: Fluff the garland. This step is especially important when using inexpensive garland. The garland also looks better if all of the branches are pointed in the same general direction, which is how they look on natural garlands that are more expensive.

Step 4: Add a swag at the bottom of your banister. I like this one and this one. I simplified the one I purchased by removing the red berries and bow. The swag comes with a wire on the top for hanging. It makes such a big difference in making your garland look pretty. If your swag does not come pre-lit, then you can add a small string of lights to it.

You can find these swags in the wreath and garland section of the craft store.

Step 5: Add dried greenery and a different kind of greenery to the garland. I love the look of dried silver dollar eucalyptus. You can find it in the floral section of the craft store or order it online. This is the key to make the inexpensive garland look amazing. You will need to trim the branches and then tuck the pieces into the garland.

The silver dollar eucalyptus is on the left. I cut up an old faux cypress garland for the greenery in the basket on the right.
This is what the garland looks like after it’s fluffed and the faux greenery is added. Notice how the branches are all pointed in the same general direction.
Adding the dried eucalyptus and additional faux greenery is the key to making this garland look amazing.

Step 6: Add bows and any other finishing touches. I kept my garland really simple this year, but you could use this as a base and add other decorations to yours such as ornaments, pinecones, or ribbon. Have fun creating something that makes you happy!

I love the festive feeling that this garland brings to our foyer.

Happy Holidays!
