Fall Mantel Garland

Sep 16, 2021 · by Meg

Fall is one of my absolute favorite times of year to decorate my home. There is something about cooler temps and the change of seasons that makes me shift from all things outdoors to focusing more on the interior spaces of my home. During the cooler months, we spend most of the time cozied up by the fireplace in our hearth room, which is right off the kitchen. The mantel is the focal point of this space, so I always like to make sure it’s decorated for the season.

I went with a more muted palate for this year’s fall mantel.

To create this year’s garland, I started by gathering the stems and picks I wanted to use. Start with a color palate and just have fun putting together pieces that you like. I went with more of a muted palate this year.

The more muted color palate will carry me all the way through the fall season. From late summer until Thanksgiving.

Then I attached two of these garlands to the mantel. I used several of these hooks to make sure the garlands were securely attached and can handle the weight of the rest of the pieces of the garland. There is nothing worse than to have a beautiful garland fall down because it wasn’t secured properly. Trust me, it’s worth taking a little bit of extra time to make sure things are attached.

These garlands are pretty on their own or they work well as a base for a more elaborate garland. I used two garlands here.

Next, I started adding different stems and picks to the base garland. I had most of these pieces from past years and only had to purchase a few new pieces to create this year’s look.

I had most of these items on hand.

I started with the eucalyptus branches, then added the green pine cone stems. To create this look, I went in order of largest to smallest when adding the stems and pics.

To create a full look, I like to let the branches cascade off the ends of the base garlands.
These stems bring some nice soft color and shape to the garland. I used three of these stems in the mantel garland.

After the long stems were all tucked in, I added several of these pumpkin picks and then finished the garland by adding these wheat picks.

I chose these pieces because I loved how the soft muted colors fit with the rest of my fall decor color palate for this year.
It’s crazy how much more full the garland looks all finished.

I’m loving the feel that the muted colors, including the tones of the mirror and artwork, bring to this space. The best part is that I was able to create this look for minimal investment because I mostly used things I already had on hand. I hope you found this post to be helpful, and I’d love to hear from you if you try making your own version of a fall garland on your mantel. If so, leave me a comment and photo below!
